Author/Artist: Yagi Norihiro
It is medieval time, darkness ruled the world. In an island, demon-like monsters called Yoma are reining. Yomas are shape shifters that feast on human guts. Because they blend in human communities an can disguised as humans, they are hard to detect. Yomas can eat each human in an entire community one by one if unidentified.
To kill and eradicate these Yomas an organization created the silver eyed witches called claymores. Claymores are women fighters yielding a huge sword to kill Yomas. They are the only one who can detect a Yoma and distinguish it from humans. Though they are on the side of the humans, Claymores are half human half yomas themselves. They use their yoma energy (yoki) to fight yomas while maintaining their control over their body by using their human mind.
The story started with a Claymore named Clare who went for a job to kill a Yoma in a small town. There she met a boy Raki who later became her companions in her journey. And that’s where their story begins.
Claymore is an exciting, action-drama combination. The artworks are great though the color is not really my type. It is more on red colors and shades of the like to emphasize the blood shedding effect. This one is full of fighting scenes; every episode has one though this would sometime become annoying when a protagonist will fight a villain for more than two episodes. They really have made use of the sword fights. This is a must see and must read for those who love to see slicing and blood shedding scenes.
The characters are great and are really distinguished to each other. There hair style, the way they really act and the fighting technique they use could make you tell that they are different characters unlike in some manga that you cannot even tell whether the characters are the same or not.
There are a lot of twist and turns in the plot. Like for example “Why is there no male Yomas?”… “What is really the objective of the Organization?” you will know this by reading the manga or watching the seires.
If you had watched the anime series, you will notice that it doesn’t end there. The manga is still on going and it now 90+ episodes… If you want to continue after watching the series you better start at chapter 62 “Cognates of Paradise 1”, because the animation series ends at chapter 61 “Invasion of Pieta 5” It is still ongoing monthly on ONE MANGA.
This manga is a shounen type (Shonen manga) primarily target boys. It is the male equivalent of Shoujo. The story often centers on fighting and action and is closely tied to the Action, Adventure and Martial Arts genres.
